Joe spent his childhood in the Western Hills, which is an area in Cincinnati; he went to the St. Xavier High School, from which he matriculated in 1974. After high school, Joe enrolled at the University of Colorado, from which he obtained a bachelor`s degree., but that wasn`t the end of his education, as he enrolled in masters studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a master`s degree in molecular biology. His career as a stockbroker began at Merill Lynch, and little by little his ambitions increased, and he eventually became the president of the EF Hutton and Smith Barney, which only increased his net worth. He started working on Financial News Network, thanks to his successful career as a stockbroker, and after merger with the CNBC in 1991, he became a part of the Network. Four years later he was made co-host of the new show “Squawk Box”, alongside Mark Haines, however Mark left the show in 2005, and was joined by Rebecca Quick, and Carl Quintanilla who stayed on the show from 2005 until 2011. Most recent addition was Andre Ross Sorkin, who is the co-host of the show since 2011. In 2012, during the so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ crisis, Kernen began a “Rise Above” campaign at CNBC, aimed at pressuring Congress to cut spending.
